COMPAQ WARRANTY REPAIR PROCEDURE

Note: Computers Associates is no longer an authorized service provider for Compaq Computer products. You should not contact them for Compaq warranty repair service.

Our Compaq DeskPro 2000 and DeskPro 4000 (aka DP2000 and DP4000) computer systems were purchased with a three year on-site service agreement that covers parts and labor. If you have a hardware problem with one of those computers that you are unable to solve, you may contact Compaq technical support at:

1-800-652-6672

Compaq requests that we be able to provide the following information upon request when we telephone them for warranty service:
  1. The Serial Number of the Equipment
On our Compaq DeskPro computers this is typically found in two places above the fan on the back of the computer and on the right hand side of the cpu on a small clear plastic label. If you are unable locate this number, contact the Fixed Asset Secretary, Dee Dee Calhoun, at 366-5997 and give her the NPS barcode number. She can look up the serial number of your computer from that bar code number. Comapq says it would also be helpful if we could give them the equipment "family" (e.g., DeskPro 2000) and the equipment "model" (e.g., 5200 MMX) when we call.

  2. A Description of the Problem
The more information we can provide, the better they can diagnose the problem. What hardware has been added to the original computer as shipped from Compaq (e.g., RAM, CD-ROM, NIC)? If Compaq parts have been added to the system, what are their Compaq part numbers? What flashing lights or error beep codes are we experiencing? If our technicians can reliably diagnose the problem, then they may be able to report their findings to Compaq's technicians (obviating the need for a telephone near the equipment).

  3. Location of Equipment and Person to Contact
Obviously Compaq will need the name and address of your school site. Be sure to provide them with a building and room number so they can locate the equipment once they arrive at your site. You should also offer a telephone number and location of a person to contact should their technician have any questions or problems.

The Compaq technical support people will want to walk you through some elementary troubleshooting techniques over the telephone so you should call them from a telephone near the computer, if possible. If you are uncomfortable opening the case of your computer, then you may want to have your Site Contact Person submit a Technology Work Request (TWR) to the District Computer Center and one of our Computer Technicians can perform the preliminary troubleshooting for you. If the problem cannot be resolved over the telephone, then Compaq will dispatch a technician to your site to perform the repair.

COMPAQ NON-WARRANTY REPAIR PROCEDURE

If you have a hardware problem with a Compaq computer that is no longer covered by the manufacturer's warranty and that you are unable to solve, then you should have your Site Contact Person submit a Technology Work Request (TWR) to the District Computer Center. One of our Computer Technicians will drop by to examine the problem and inform you of your options and their approximate costs.
