There are various functions that can be accessed while logged onto
a Windows UDT (Unified DeskTop) computer by pressing Control-Alt-Delete
(simultaneously pressing the Ctrl, the Alt,
and the Delete keys). After pressing this three-key
combination you should see the Windows Security dialog box
(aka the Control-Alt-Delete screen) appear near the center of your
computer screen. The upper portion of this screen contains the
Logon Information:
- The identity of the person logged into this computer
- The date and time they logged into this computer
Below the Logon Information are six buttons that perform various
functions. These buttons are described in the following sections.
Lock Computer
The Lock Workstation button will allow staff to lock their workstations
when they must leave their computer unattended for a moment. Only the user
who locked the workstation or a UDT Desktop Administrator can unlock a
locked workstation. If an administrator unlocks a workstation the user
account that is currently logged into the computer is forced to logoff
and any unsaved work will be lost. Therefore, you should
always save any open documents before locking a workstation.
If you plan to leave your computer for more than a few minutes
you should  Log Off  the computer rather than lock your
workstation. You can automate the Lock Workstation function by checking the password
protect feature on the Screen Saver Tab under the Display Properties screen.
Log Off
When you click on the Logoff button the computer will attempt to close
all documents, end all programs, and log you off of the computer. This has
the same effect as clicking on the Start button and selecting
Shut Down, then selecting Close all programs and log on as a
different user.
Shut Down
This button will log you out and turn your computer off. If possible,
you should save your work and close any open applications before shutting
your computer down to avoid data loss.
Change Password
If you want to change your password, click on the Change Password
button. The computer will ask you to enter your current (old) password
once and your new password twice. Entering your new password twice helps
prevent unintentionally misspelled passwords.
Task Manager
The Task Manager button allows you to regain control of your computer
when a program is no longer responding (i.e., if it is "frozen"). In the Task
Manager, select the program that is not responding and
then click on the End Task button. This should end that program.
 Caution!
You should only do this if the Task Manager reports that a
program is Not Responding. This procedure could potentially damage
your files, your user profile, or even your computer and it should be used
only as a last resort to regain control of an unresponsive computer. Even
after ending an unresponsive task, you may need to restart your computer
to fully restore normal operation. A less hazardous procedure is to use
the Log Off button (see above) and let Windows attempt to shut down
all of your programs (end all tasks).
Cancel
If you decide you did not need any of the functions available on the
Control-Alt-Delete screen, you may click Cancel to return you to
your desktop with no changes.
