Map a Network Drive

MAP A NETWORK DRIVE (Windows)

Right-click on the This Computer icon (UDT) or on the My Computer icon (Windows 95/98).

In the properties menu that appears, select Map Network Drive.

In the Map Network Drive window that appears ...

      Map Network Drive Window

  1. Select a drive letter in the "Drive:" box. Your computer will often already be using A - D (and possibly others) for its hardware devices and we are currently using several drive letters from P - Z for UDT network drives. We usually recommend you select an unused drive letter from E - O for UDT (NPS Unified DeskTop) accounts. It is OK to map the S: drive to the district shared space for local (non-UDT) accounts.

  2. Enter a valid network path of the form \\hostname\sharename into the "Path:" box. The hostname is the network name for the computer hosting the resources you wish to access over the network. The sharename is the network name for the specific folder or device that has been explicitly shared from the host computer. For example, to connect to the share named "shared" on the computer named "winpdc" you would enter: \\winpdc\shared. (The S: drive is automatically mapped to \\winpdc\shared - the NPS district shared space - for all NPS UDT accounts.

    • To find the hostname of a Windows NT4 (UDT) or Windows 95/98 computer: Click on the Start button; Select Settings, then Control Panel; Double-click the Network control panel icon; the hostname for that computer is listed in the "Computer Name:" box in the Network window that appears.
    • To find the hostname of a Windows 2000 computer: Right-click on the This Computer icon on the desktop; Select Properties; then select the Ntework Identification tab. The hostname for that computer is listed to the right of "Full computer name:".
    • To find the hostname of a Windows XP computer: Click on the Start button; Right-click on the "My Computer"; Select Properties; then select the Computer Name tab. The hostname for that computer is listed to the right of "Full computer name:".

  3. The "Connect As:" box may be left blank - provided the account and password you used to log into your local computer are also valid (and have appropriate permissions) on the host computer you are trying to reach.

  4. If you would like the mapped network drive to reappear the next time you log in, then you should should put a check mark in the "Reconnect at Logon" box. Note: network drives mapped for one user profile may not be mapped for any other users who log into that computer. If you need a recurring mapped network drive for all users of a UDT computer, then you should use the NPS Desktop Manager rather than this Map Network Drive procedure.

  5. Click "OK" to close the "Map Network Drive" window.

If your computer is able to reach the host computer and shared resource you specified, then you should see the new network drive appear in your list of drives.
