Connecting to Search Plus

Step-by-Step UDT access to "Search Plus" software: 4-02-99

FYI: Below is a guide on how to setup your UDT machine so that it will only give students access to the intended application stored on your server. Also, a teacher no longer has to use their own password to log on a student to use the computer. Unwanted activities such as students gaining access to the Internet, teacher e-mail, system files, etc. can be a thing of the past on classroom computers if your on a UDT machine.

There are 4 steps to this process:
  1. Configure the server to permit UDT users to access Search Plus
  2. Create a permanent drive mapping from the UDT machine
  3. Run setup on the software
  4. Drag the Search Plus shortcut inside the "desktop" folder in the "All Users" window.

STEP 1: Configure the server to recognize users

NOTE:I am assuming that the "Search Plus" software has already been installed on your school's server.

The student will be able to access the "Search Plus" software by logging on the UDT machine with their UDT username and password. In order for this to work, someone who has rights to work on the server may first have to designate the correct Follett group permissions for UDT accounts to be granted access.
(This differs from site to site, as not all servers are running the same operating system. Therefore, contact your site administrator if you encounter difficulties finding a method that works.)

STEP 2: Create a permanent drive mapping "from" the UDT machine "to" the server

NOTE: You must be running UDT version 1.33 or later for this to work.

If you are not on at least version 1.33, click here to learn how to update your UDT using a patch.
Also, this step must be done at each UDT machine you want to access Search Plus. This step is important, because a permanent drive will be mapped to the Unison software on the server, which cannot be disconnected by any users other than an administrator.
  • Click "Start" Choose "Run".
  • Type "dmedit" [Click here for a detailed explanation of dmedit]
  • Click "OK"

In the Map Machine Drives window that appears (example below)

    Map Machine Drives Window
  • Type a letter not used by another drive, then the network path to the star software.
For example: G:\\fs155\pc (Where G: is not currently being used for any other drive mappings)

  • Click "OK"
  • Restart the machine.

  • Once the machine has rebooted:
  • Click "This Computer".
In the This Computer window that appears you should see a drive icon with the letter you assigned just below
(Similar to the "C: drive" icon)

This drive will retain a connection to the specified path regardless of who logs on (and only those with security rights will be able to access the contents).
If all of the steps have been followed correctly, then your students can now logon as "star" with the password "sreader" to access the Star Reader software program.

STEP 3: Run Search plus setup

  • (Click) This Computer
  • (Click) the G: drive icon
  • (Click) Unison Folder --> Winopac Folder --> Wsetup.exe
  • (Click) "OK"
After setup is completed, a desktop shortcut icon should appear on the desktop. Step 4 describes how to make this shortcut available to all users that logon on a computer that is configured to run Search Plus.

STEP 4: Move the Search plus shortcut to the All Users "Desktop" folder

(Right Click) on the "Start" button and (Choose) "Open All Users"
    Hit the Backspace key
When the All Users window appears (example below)

    Start-All Users Window

    Open the Desktop folder
Drag the Search Plus shortcut into the All Users window.
    Restart the machine

Your students should now be able to successfully access Search Plus when they click on the Seach Plus desktop shortcut. Steps 2-4 should be repeated at each workstation that you wish to run Search Plus.
