Share a Printer

This document describes how to share a printer which is connected to a UDT computer with other computers on the network. This general procedure also works for many Windows 95, 98, 2000, and XP computers.

  1. Log in
Log in to the UDT computer that is connected to the printer you would like to share.

  2. Open the Printers folder
Click the Start button, then select Settings, then Printers.

  3. Share the Printer
Right-click on the printer you want to share. Select "Sharing". Click on the "Shared" radio-button. Enter a short Share Name for the printer. For example, if you are sharing a laser printer attached to a computer in room 201 then you might enter a Share Name of "laser201" (without the quotes). The share name should be 8 characters or less and avoid spaces & strange characters. Dashes "-" and underscores "_" are OK.

  4. Record the Network Path
Before you can connect another computer to the printer you just shared, you will need to know the network path to the printer. The network path is composed of two pieces of information. The first is the network name of the computer to which the printer is attached - i.e., the computer from which we just shared the printer (above). You can find the network name of a UDT computer by right-clicking on The Network (on the desktop), then selecting Properties from the menu that appears. Make sure the Identification tab is selected. Make a note of the Computer Name. An example of a computer name might be: "C123456"

The network path to the printer begins with two backslashes, followed by the Computer Name, followed by a single backslash, and ending with the printer's Share Name. Using the examples above, the network path to our shared printer would be:

      \\C123456\laser201
