UDT Compatibility

This document contains lists of hardware items and software titles along with our current estimate of whether or not they are compatible with the UDT (Unified Desktop - i.e., Windows NT 4.0) workstations as well as any known compatibility issues or work-arounds. Unless otherwise noted in the Issues section of the tables below, you should use the manufacturer's instructions for installation. If your experience differs from the information contained in this document then please let us know on our Comments web page.

Hardware Compatibility Issues

Alphasmart 2000 Infrared Technology	No	Ann Gallagher reports that the wireless infrared port does not communicate properly with Windows NT. You can still connect using the Alphasmart cables.
IOmega Zip Drive	Yes	The IOmegaWare 1.0 driver shipped with many of the earlier IOmega Zip drives is not compatible with Windows NT 4.0 systems. The new IOmegaWare 2.0 driver is compatible and can be downloaded free of charge from www.iomega.com/software/ . Example Location(s): Truman Computer Lab
USB Technology	No	There are currently no native Universal Serial Bus (USB) device drivers for Windows NT. You should not expect to connect equipment to a Windows NT computer (i.e., a UDT computer) via a USB port.

Software Compatibility Issues

Software Notes:

Technical support at The Learning Company (TLC) told us their software often attempts to directly access the hardware (e.g., video, audio). This is incompatible with Windows NT (including UDT) systems.
An * indicates the software is networked and shared from a file server.
The CD column indicates whether or not the software requires its CD-ROM to be in the CD-ROM drive.
The UDT column indicates whether or not the software is compatible with the Unified DeskTop (UDT) software suite. In some cases, software listed as incompatible might be configurable for the UDT but is not supported on the UDT platform due to its effects on the computer and/or other users. If you have any questions regarding UDT compatibility of any software (whether or not it is listed below) you should consult with the Technical Support team at the District Computer Center prior to installation.

Accelerated Reader v5.01* Yes ?
Map a network drive to the file server share containing the AR data.
Install from Accelerated Reader floppy diskette labelled "Install" using the C:\AccReader folder for the program folder and using the ...\AR5\DATA folder on the file server for the data folder.
For Windows 95 computers AR5 will prompt you to update the VREDIR file. This can be downloaded from Microsoft's web site. A readme file is provided when you download VREDIR which gives more detailed instruction.

Updates may lead to document version incompatibilities between updated and non-updated software (users can't open their documents on other UDTs)

Insert the network floppy installation diskette.
Run SETUP from the CLIENT folder on the floppy.
Seems to work fine when run from an account with local administrative priveleges, but not from non-admin accounts. The permissions seem fine for files installed locally. Perhaps a problem accessing some system files somewhere? We had to leave Student (no password) as a local admin account on UDTs. We will revisit this issue in the future.
