UDT Installation

Preparation: It is of utmost importance to understand that this installation will delete everything from the computer itself, and only re-install the default UDT programs (office, etc). If you have documents saved on your "My Stuff" (U) drive, it will be safe because that is stored on the server, however if you have documents or programs installed on the computer C Drive, they will be lost.

When you have saved your documents on a floppy or your "My Stuff" (U) drive, continue with the install.

Step 1

The UDT installer includes a floppy disk and a CD-ROM. At times a computer will not need the floppy to be inserted, but it will never hurt. Some are set to read the CD-ROM when you start up, and it will directly access the CD, however there are many computers in the district that will not do so and require a floppy.

To be safe, insert both into the computer and restart it. After a few messages flash up, you will be given the message

"NPS Desktop 2.1-- Warning: This installation procedure will replace all data on the primary hard drive. Strike a key when ready..."

Press any key to begin the process. It will show a percentage and time elapsed. Remove the floppy disk (NOT CD-ROM) after you see the progress bar. The copy process should take about 10 to 15 minutes.

When it is complete, you will be given the message:

"The computer must reboot to initiate the setup process. Remove any bootable media at this time."

Take the CD-ROM out of the computer, as well as the floppy disk if you did not remove it earlier, and press ‘ctrl+alt+delete’ to reboot the computer. Be certain to remove the CD and floppy, or the process will start over again.

Step 2

When the computer comes back up, you will see this screen:

Select the kind of computer you are installing the UDT on. If you are unsure ask your site contact. In the blank, type the computer code, followed by the NPS number on the computer.

Computer Code

  • C = classroom computer
  • L = Laptop
  • A = Administration/Office computer
    NPS Desktop Setup -Identity Tab

In the example given above, it is a classroom computer with NPS number 202030, so you would type C202030. C for the computer code, and 202030 for the type. If it were a laptop, it would begin with L, and for office computers it would begin with A.

Click the "Super User" tab to show the next screen. Type in your site’s ‘super user’ name and password. If you are unsure, ask your site contact.

    NPS Desktop Setup-Super Tab

Click OK and your computer will restart. Remember to leave everything out of the CD-ROM and floppy drives. When the computer comes back up, everything should be in good working order.
