VoIP Notes

VoIP (Voice over Internet Protocol) is the short name for a network-based telephone service using digital IP telephones. Our initial deployment of VoIP will be broken down into two stages. Stage 1 will prepare the NPS network for VoIP services and will require us to reconfigure or replace every network switch in every network closet and cabinet. Stage 2 will replace our analog phones with digital IP phones. Our VoIP Deployment Time Line offers more information about and the schedule for these two stages. We expect VoIP will allow us to more quickly respond to personnel changes & relocations as well as facilitate future telephone services in new locations (e.g., classrooms) by leveraging our existing network infrastructure.

General Timeline:

  • Spring 2008: convert a few volunteer schools (Stage 1 & 2)
  • Summer 2008: upgrade remaining networks (Stage 1)
  • Fall 2008: convert remaining schools (Stage 2)
  • The VoIP Deployment Time Line offers more specific info

  • Wireless Notes

“Wireless” refers to end-user networked devices such as portable notebook computers. Our wireless access points (network radios) still require both wired network connections and power. Before we were comfortable adding the burden of a district wireless network we needed to fortify our existing wired network infrastructure. We began by replacing existing 10 Mbps hubs, 10/100 Mbps switches, and routers with new Cisco equipment capable of providing the low latency, high speed, and high bandwidth we need today as well as the prioritization and security necessary for emerging technologies such as streaming video and VoIP telephony.

The initial deployment plan for our NPS district wireless network included classrooms and offices in permanent buildings owned by NPS. Notable exceptions in this initial deployment include portable classrooms and leased facilities such as the Leland Wolf School and Alternative Education. While Gymnasiums and PE offices were included, locker rooms, weight rooms and other athletic facilities were not specifically targeted for coverage. However, some of those areas benefit from wireless coverage in neighboring areas of coverage such as offices and gymnasiums.

Over 90% of the wireless access points (APs) in our initial district-wide deployment were operational prior to the Fall 2006 school term. The current status of our wireless deployment:

    • Elementary:  The wireless networks in all elementary schools are fully functional with the exception of the access point in the gymnasium at Wilson which has a wiring problem.

    • Secondary:  Alcott, Irving, Longfellow, NHS, and NNHS are fully functional. 9 of the 11 APs at Whittier are available.

    • Administrative:  ASC (including Curriculum and Special Services), DCC, ISC, and PDC are fully operational. The 2 APs for CSC have yet to be installed. The Child Nutrition building on the NHS campus is also

The discussion above focuses on our initial wireless deployment plan. We also plan to add wireless network coverage in the new classroom additions at Roosevelt, Washington, and NHS. Initially, we were told the classrooms in the old gym at Lakeview were temporary so we did not include them in our plan. But we live in a dynamic district (change is our one constant!) so we now realize we need to add an AP for those classrooms as well. We will extend wireless coverage into the rest of the district as needs dictate and our limited resources (money and time) allow. If you have a need for wireless network coverage in portable classrooms or other buildings not covered in our initial deployment phase or mentioned in this note, you are welcome to have your administrator or your technology Site Contact person email me.

Our wireless network is an extension of our wired network. Our wired network is continually growing and evolving. We expect our wireless network to do the same. We appreciate your continued patience as we endeavor to meet your present networking needs and, when possible, anticipate and prepare for the future.
