Using WebPad

The main (first) document in an NPS web site should be named "index.html" or "index.htm".

Webpad is a UDT specific program that will allow you to create web pages of your own with ease. Microsoft originally named this product "FrontPad", then later renamed it "FrontPage Express". For your convenience, we've included it in the UDT software package in the Start menu under Common Programs ... Accessories ... WebPad. Making a web page has never been simpler. The key to webpad is that you do not have to know anything about HTML. It is just like typing into a word processor, and when you are done the page will be finished for you.

Why would anyone need a web page?

By having a web page it will allow your students to check class specific information on their own, whether it be assignments, information, or grades. Teachers from other districts could see what was going on in Norman. Parents could get up to date reports of how their children are doing in your class. If a student was sick they could check the page for homework. The possibilities are endless and the effort is minimal.

How to use WebPad

Open WebPad

On any UDT, WebPad is on your start menu. Click on the Start Button, then Common Programs, then Accessories, then WebPad. The icon looks like a white notepad with a red feather pen.

Open an HTML file

If you are creating a new file, begin typing text into the blank document that appears on the screen just as you would in a word processor such as Microsoft Word or Works. You may open a new document at any time by choosing File, then New, then selecting 'Normal Page' in the box that appears.

To open an existing file or template, click File, then Open, where you can either type in the path of the file or click 'Browse' to select it from your computer.

You can use any page on the Web as a template by choosing File, then Save As in your browser menu, naming the file, and saving it on your W: drive. The W: drive is set up on the UDT for staff webpages. At this time, Student's do not have a W: drive or web space. Everyone's W: drive is unique, just as is everyone's U: drive (My Stuff). In the 'Save as' dialog box, be sure to choose 'HTML file' from the 'Save as type' drop-down menu. You can then open this file in WebPad and edit it.

Orient yourself to the menus and buttons

The user interface for FrontPage Express is similar to that of Microsoft Word. Toolbar buttons and menu bar options are similar to the ones in Word. Some buttons will make larger text, some will color the text. If you are not sure what a button does, move your mouse over the button until a yellow box appears and it will give a brief description about the button. If you need help, the online documentation can be accessed by going to 'help' on the menu and selecting 'Microsoft FrontPage Express Help.'

Save your work

Save your work often so that if you make a mistake or your computer freezes, you can always go back to a previous version of your work.

Choose File, then Save As from the menu bar.
Type in a page title. This is optional, and is not the same thing as a file name for your document.

Click on the 'As a File' button. This is different from Word!.
To put the file on the web, title it 'index.html' or 'index.htm' and put it in your W: drive. Click the 'Save' button.

Publishing your web page

When the file is in your W: drive, you can tell friends your web address. Your web page address (URL) will be:
    www.norman.k12.ok.us/~username
where username is your UDT (and email) username. In other words, your web page address is simply the Norman Public School's web page address with your user name appended to the end. For example, if your name is John Doe and your username is jdoe, your web page would be located at:
    www.norman.k12.ok.us/~jdoe
Don't forget the ~ (tilde) symbol.

Our Instructional Services Center (ISC) offers a 4-page Webpad Handout in their Webpad training sessions or here on the web.
