As with most software that remains available for any length of time,
there are multiple versions of the Open Office productivity suite. At the
start of 2009 NPS is still using Open Office version 1.1 and Microsoft Office 2003.
Newer versions of both are available.
The latest bells and whistles described in some of the links below may or may not
be available in the version of the software you are using.

Sun's StarOffice office productivity software suite is built upon
the free OpenOffice foundation with the addition of a few proprietary components.
But documentation and tutorials for StarOffice should be
very helpful for OpenOffice users as well. Guides for recent versions of
StarOffice are offered below. The User Guide for Version 7 was 456 pages long.
The more recent Getting Started Guides for versions 8 and 9 are much shorter and
offer fewer details. I've included the older/detailed with the newer/briefer
versions so you can take your pick:
StarOffice 9 Getting Started Guide - 88 page PDF
StarOffice 8 Getting Started Guide - 78 page PDF
StarOffice 7 Users Guide - 456 page PDF (more detailed)
