Students insert, move, and resize a graphic in a document.

Students collaborate in the creation of a multimedia slide show containing text and graphics.

Students use different views to create and organize multimedia presentations.

Students enter an Internet address (URL) to access a web site.

Students create a greeting card, label, sticker, bookplate, or simple sign using desktop publishing software.

Description: In this unit students will progress through the roles of Explorer, Researcher, Designer, and Evaluator as they learn about world geography.

Student as Explorer : Students explore a variety books, videos, magzines and web sites to discover new and interesting things about the countries and continents.

Student as Researcher: Students investigate and research countries and continents.

  • Graphic Organizers: Continent Concept Maps , Venn Diagrams, storyboard, charts to organize and analyze information about continents. Students use www.yahooligans.com and http://www.geographia.com/ to find information. PASS I.C. 3
  • Literature: Students read and respond to stories about different cultures, animals, etc. PASS I.A.3.
  • Animals chart/database: Students gather specific information about Arctic and Antarctic animals, then use the information to create a Venn Diagram. GT Extension: Students enter data into a database template (see Animals database) and then use the Sort function to look for patterns in the data. PASS Science Process and Inquiry II. B.
  • Weather Mapping: Students check weather at selected international cities every day and chart (create a table in MS Word) and map, then compare to Norman weather. http://www.weather.com/. Students link a 3X5" card with yarn to a selected city. On the card they write the date, temperature, and outlook (fair, cloudy, snow, etc.) every day for 7-14 days. Math/GT Extension: At the end of the 7-14 days they graph the information on paper or using a spreadsheet. PASS I.C. 2

Student as Designer: Students design creative products that illustrate and explain the location, culture and environment of cities, countries and continents.

  • World Tour in Virtual Postcards Print off a world map from http://www.eduplace.com/ss/ssmaps/index.html. Students choose a city or town on each continent to visit and create a two postcard mini reports of that city or region. Students located, mark and connect their world tour cities. Mini tour includes information about the people/culture and land/environment. Pictures or clip art should illustrate each city/region, and each postcard is printed and linked to the map with yarn. PASS I.B. 1 & 2, I.C. 1, 2, & 5
