R. Know the defining characteristics of a variety of genre (e.g., plays, poetry, fiction, nonfiction, fantasy, fairytales, fables, folktales, myths, biography).

V. WRITING
A. Use a writing process to develop and refine composition skills.
1. Use a variety of prewriting activities such as brainstorming, clustering, illustrating, and webbing.
B. Communicate through a variety of written forms and for various purposes and audiences, such as:

VIII. VISUAL LITERACY/LITERARY RESPONSE
B. Use electronic media to access information from various sources including dictionary, encyclopedia, thesaurus, atlas, and Internet.
F. Recognize differences in types of writing such as fiction, nonfiction, and poetry.

This activity can be modified to use any theme, holiday, or storybook.

Have students:
  1. Brainstorm, web, and/or list nouns and adjectives that go with the holiday.
  2. Type in the URL to Grandpa Tucker's Rhymes and Tales and press the Enter/Return key on the keyboard. http://www.grandpatucker.com/
  3. Bookmark this website (in Navigator go to Bookmark>Add Bookmark; in Explorer go to to Favorites>Add to Favorites...).
  4. Click on a link to one of the Holiday Pages. Read the poems.
  5. Type in the URL to Lycos RhymeZone http://rhyme.lycos.com. Bookmark the web site. Find words that rhyme with the brainstormed list, and choose some rhyming words to use.



  6. Open and save a new word processing file.
  7. Type in a holiday poem using the rhyming words chosen.
  8. Select the poem text and change the font, style, size, and alignment.
  9. Insert appropriate clip art.
  10. Save and Print the document.
