Students will create an
ABC book on inventors and inventions in Microsoft
Publisher to present to their class. This
project will take about 5 - 7 days to complete. You will
need to coordinate the research step of this unit with
the library media specialist. Research Phase 1. Each student will research (a minimum of 13 inventions and a maximum of 13 inventors) and create a Publisher 98 booklet (with graphics) that contains at least two facts about the invention or inventor. These facts should be important to the invention's development. (For example, the date of the inventor's birth and death would not be important.) See the rubric for more specific requirements. 2. Students may use books, magazines and Internet to research their inventor/invention. They are required to use at least one reference book, one book or magazine, and one online source. Students should bookmark any web pages they use for reference. 3. Students will turn in a rough draft on the 3rd day of the project for a grade. Production Phase 1. Open MS Publisher (Start > Common Programs > Publisher) and choose the Blank Publications tab.
2. Choose Full Page and click on the Create button. 3. Go to the File menu, choose Print Setup and click on Landscape.
4. Now go to File > Page Setup and click on Special Fold.
5. Your ABC book will be 5.5" X 8.5" (half size pages). Use the Text Frame Tool to create areas for word processing (text). Use the Clip Gallery Tool to place and insert clip art.
6. Your book will be printed in black and white, so don't waste time working with colors. Remember that you want your book to be readable, so keep your graphics simple and use plain fonts. 7. Use Spellcheck (Tools > Spelling) and be sure to Save your document often. 8. The last page should list the resources you used in your research and your publication date. You may add a paragraph about the author (you!). Resources
