I. PEOPLE, PLACES, AND ENVIRONMENTS
B. Places (World)
1. Name the seven continents, the four oceans, and major world river systems and locate them on a globe and a map.
C. Environment
1. Distinguish among map symbols (e.g., legend references to land, water, roads, and cities).
3. Use mental maps of regions, continents, and the world to demonstrate understanding of relative location, direction, scale, size, and shape.
5. Locate and distinguish among varying landforms and geographic features (e.g., mountains, plateaus, islands, and oceans).
6. Use the equator and prime meridian to identify the Northern, Southern, Eastern, and Western hemispheres, and be introduced to the concepts of meridians of longitude and parallels of latitude.

III. INFORMATION AND RESEARCH
Students read widely to acquire knowledge, conduct research, and organize information.


B. Use guide words to locate words in dictionaries and topics in encyclopedias.
C. Use and interpret charts, maps, graphs, schedules, directions, and diagrams.
D. Use the title page, table of contents, glossary, chapter headings, and index to locate information.
E. Use text formats as an aid in constructing meaning from nonfiction (expository) text (e.g., heading, subheading, bold print, and italics).
G. Locate, organize and synthesize information from a variety of print and nonprint and technological resources (e.g., dictionaries, reference books, atlases, magazines, informational text, thesaurus, and technology/Internet).

H. Compile information into written reports or summaries.

V. WRITING

The student will:

A. Use a writing process to develop and refine composition skills.
1. Use a variety of prewriting activities such as brainstorming, clustering, illustrating, and webbing.
2. Compose first drafts.
3. Revise selected drafts, changing or adding details and vivid words.
4. Proofread/edit writing with peers or teacher.
5. Share writing with peers or adults.

VII. LISTENING/SPEAKING

D. Participate in storytelling, give oral book reports, and present poems, stories, plays, and pantomime.

VIII. VISUAL LITERACY/LITERARY RESPONSE

The student will:

The student will create a KWL chart, a map, and a short report with clip art about their assigned ocean or sea. The report should include such factual information as the size, depth, outstanding features, marine life.

Guiding Questions
  • How do oceans affect the rest of the planet?
  • What ocean resources do we use and need?
  • What threatens oceans?
  • What can we do to protect and enjoy oceans?

Research Phase

  1. As a class, create a KWL chart on the topic of oceans, and fill in the "Know" and "Want to Know" categories.

  2. As a whole class, preview the Evergreen Project Oceans web site http://mbgnet.mobot.org/salt/oceans/index.htm

  3. Add information to the "Learned" category of the KWL chart. Change any incorrect information in the "Know" category.

  4. Assign each student an ocean or sea to research.

  5. Have each student create their own KWL chart in Microsoft Word using the Insert Table button.













  6. Require students to use more than one resource, such as an almanac, encyclopedia, web site, atlas, or fact book to find their information. (You may wish to have the media specialist instructs students on how to use more than one resource to research their projects, and appropriate and efficient research skills; when should you use a book, encyclopedia, atlas, or almanac, and when should you use the Internet.) *See suggested online resources listed below.*

  7. Have students bookmark web sites they use, and cite these and other information sources in their KWL chart.


    Production Phase

  8. Have students draw and label a map of their ocean in MS Paint (Start>Common Programs>Accessories>Paint). Before printing their map, make sure students use Print Preview (File>Print Preview) to view the map. Students may need to resize their map so that it fits to one page (Image>Stretch/Skew> 80% horizontal and 80% vertical).



  9. Next have student open a word processing program such as Microsoft Word or Works and type in a short report (using their KWL chart) describing their ocean or sea. Tell students to cite their sources at the bottom of the page. Demonstrate how to use the spell check function. (Tools>Spelling) Remind students to save to their U: drive or a floppy disk.
  10. Have students print a draft copy to edit, or save to a common shared folder so that others can view and edit the writing.
  11. After students edit and correct their work, show them how to add clip art. (You may wish to demonstrate how to use the Find function in the Microsoft Clip Art Gallery.)




  12. Have students print, present and share their information. Then, as a whole class, add more information to the "Know" category of the classroom's Oceans KWL chart.

Extensions

  • Students may use the Microsoft Publisher 98 Wizard to create a brochure or advertisement flyer for an ocean cruise.
