Students read, construct meaning, and respond to a wide variety of literary forms.
P. Interpret poetry and recognize stanza and rhyme as characteristics of poetry.
R. Know the defining characteristics of a variety of genre (e.g., plays, poetry, fiction, nonfiction, fantasy, fairytales, fables, folktales, myths, biography).

VIII. VISUAL LITERACY/LITERARY RESPONSE
B. Use electronic media to access information from various sources including dictionary, encyclopedia, thesaurus, atlas, and Internet.
F. Recognize differences in types of writing such as fiction, nonfiction, and poetry.

This activity can be used before, during, or after formally teaching different poetry forms

Have students:
  1. Open an Internet browser (Start>Common Programs>Internet Explorer or Navigator).

  2. Type in the URL http://scrtec.org and press the Enter/Return key on the keyboard.


  3. Click on TrackStar.

  4. Click on Find Tracks by Keyword.

  5. In the Keyword box type in the word "poetry"

  6. Scroll down to the Track entitled "Poetry is for everyone!" by Amy Martin and click on the hyperlinked title.

  7. Scroll down the page past the description and click on the "frames" option.

  8. Bookmark (Favorites in Internet Explorer) this Track.



  9. Follow the Track directions at the top of the page.

  10. Read other student's published poetry on the page entitled "Publishing a Poem".
