Oklahoma PASS Objectives
Science
XI. Characteristics and Basic Needs of Organisms
A.
Plants and animals need to take in air, water, and food. In addition, plants need light.
B. Plants and animals have features (e.g., breathing structures, limbs, skin covering, seed dispersal, roots, stems, and leaves) that help them live in environments such as air, water, or land.
D. Scientists use the five senses and tools (e.g., magnifiers and rulers) to gather information, such as size and shape about living things.

Math
VI. Data Analysis
B.
Read graphs and charts; identify the main idea, draw conclusions, make predictions based on the data.
C.
Construct a variety of graphs with labels and a title (e.g., bar, pictograph).

NPS Curriculum
5.1.1 - The students will use standard units to estimate and measure length and weight of an object (inches, feet).

Science - The students will understand the concept of growth in the lifecycle of a plant.

NPS Technology
Scope & Sequence Objective

Students will enter data into a spreadsheet to produce a graph.

Description: Students will plant peas, record growth, and enter data into a simple spreadsheet to produce a graph.

Lesson :
1. Students will understand the basic needs of the pea plant to promote growth.

2. Students need to understand the difference between standard and non-standard forms of measurement.

3. Students measure their plant at intervals and record the growth in a journal (they can make predicitons for future growth as well).

4. Students enter plant growth amounts into a simple spreadsheet and produce a graph. To get to a spreadsheet, students need to go to (START>Common Programs>Excel). Next, students need to input their data into the cells starting with cell A1.

5. After all information is transfered to the spreadsheet, students can highlight the information they wish to graph and then select "INSERT" and then "Chart" to create their graph. Students can go to chart options to add titles, labels, and edit colors in their graph. Students can save work (FILE>SAVE AS), and print out their graph to take home (FILE>PRINT).

NOTES
Extensions:
Weigh plants as the plants grow larger.
Measure water amounts given to the plants and record those amounts.
Count aphids and record the number on a spreadsheet.
