Students print a document.

Students use the mouse to choose options in a menu.

Students use a web browser, buttons and hypertext links.

Students enter an internet address (URL) to access a web site.

Students bookmark web sites.

Description: Students will collect, sort, and organize, data. They will present data in bar graphs.

Lesson :

1. Place students in groups of 3 or 4.

2. Using the following questions, have students collect data from teachers or other students:
A. What is your favorite candy bar?
B. What is your favorite color?
C. What is your favorite season?
D. What is your favorite cereal?
E. What is your favorite sport?
F. What is your favorite hobby?
G. What is your favorite pizza?

3. After data is collected, have students sort into categories (ex. pizza = pepperoni, sausage, cheese, etc.).

4. Go to the computer (choose 1 question to graph).

5. Open Internet Explorer or Navigator (Start > Common Programs > Internet Explorer or Navigator).

6. Type in the URL web address for the Create a Graph website http://nces.ed.gov/nceskids/Graphing/

7. Bookmark the website (Favorites > Add to Favorites, or Bookmarks > Add Bookmark).

8. In the Select Type of Graph box pull down to choose Bar Graph.

9. Enter your graph information.

10. Scroll down and click on Create Printable Graph button.

11. Print your graph (File > Print).

NOTES:
Before collecting information, have students predict which category they think will be the favorite.

To extend this lesson have students use the same data to make a pie graph or a line graph.
