Description: Students will
develop an understanding of bats and their habitats
through the use of technology. Lesson:
1. Create a K-W-L chart (what we know, what we
want to learn, what we've learned)
2. Read the book Stellaluna by Janell Cannon
3. Show Microsoft PowerPoint presentation on bats.
4. Create a bat journal that will be used throughout the
unit.
5. Have the students select a bat they would like to
study.
6. In the computer lab, students will use the Internet to
find information on a specific bat. They can also use the
following link: http://trackstar.hprtec.org
7. Students will use Microsoft Word to create short,
descriptive paragraphs about their bats. A MS Word
tutorial can be found at http://microsoft.com/Education/DOWNLOADS/Tutorials/IOC/Word97/start.doc
8. In the computer lab, students will draw a bat using the
Microsoft Paint program. A Paint tutorial can be found at
http://www.lkwdpl.org/classes/MSPaint/paint.html .
9. Students will use their previous bat picture to insert
into a new paint document for an art lesson based on
perspective.
10. Have students construct an Oklahoma Bat Map that
shows cave locations using the Microsoft Paint program.
11. Review measurement concepts. (inches, feet)
12. Discuss wingspan of bats with students.
13. Students will find the wingspan of five different
bats and create a graph using
the "Create A Graph" website. http://nces.ed.gov/nceskids/Graphing/ Ask students to make up a question about their
graph. They can trade questions with a partner to check
understanding.
14. Students will find the location of their bat using
maps, atlases, and globes.
15. Students will create a multimedia presentation
using Microsoft PowerPoint to display the knowledge they
have gathered about bats. http://aitt.acadiau.ca/tutorials/PowerPoint97/index.htm
16. Students will present their Microsoft PowerPoint
presentations to the class.
17. Bring the class back together and complete the
"L" portion of the K-W-L chart.
