OBSERVING AND MEASURING
The student will...

A. Make descriptive and numerical observations of the world.

XVI. CHANGES IN EARTH AND SKY

A. The sun warms the land, air, and water.

B. Weather changes from day to day and over the seasons. Weather can be observed by measuring temperature and describing cloud formations.

First Grade Language Arts
WRITING
The student will:

A. Use a process approach to write coherently, using developmentally appropriate steps of the writing process; prewriting, drafting, revising, editing or proofreading, publishing or sharing.

C. Write for a variety of purposes and audiences.

D. Use handwriting/ penmanship to copy and/or compose text using correct formation and spacing of letters.

VI GRAMMAR/USAGE AND MECHANICS
The student will begin to:

A. Write and speak using standard English conventions appropriate to the grade level.

  1. Have students open a paint program.(Start>Common Programs>Accessories>Paint)

  2. Give students at least 15 minutes to explore the different tools that are available in a paint program. Encourage them to try as many different tools as possible (especially the pencil, eraser, paintbrush, spray can, paint bucket, line tools, and shape tools).



  3. At the end of the exploration time have them close the page without saving.

  4. Have students go to the File menu to create a new document in the paint program.



  5. Tell the students that they will create a weather picture in the paint program. Tell students that they must use the text tool, a paint tool, and a shape tool.

  6. Have the students include a sentence describing the weather in the picture.




  7. When students have finished their painting have them print their work.

  • You may want to combine this lesson with the Science Activity #2.
  • Students can make a weekly weather chart by using the line tool to make a grid.
