Geometry

| Oklahoma PASS Objectives 7th Grade Mathematics III. GEOMETRY - PLANE B. Describe, draw, classify, and compare geometric figures according to their shapes and properties (e.g., circles, quadrilaterals, hexagons, determine whether all squares are rectangles, explain why only triangles, quadrilaterals, and hexagons can tile a plane). 8th GradeMathematics Instructional Technology NPS Middle School

In this activity
students will manipulate shapes on a web site and explore
and identify polygons by characteristics. Students will
also construct shapes and nets using Microsoft Word draw
tools, paper, and various supplies. 1. The Exploring Geometric Solids and Their Properties web site has a five part, interactive lesson. It takes students through an investigation of solid polygons. Students manipulate the polygons and fill in tables to answer questions about the shapes. Print out pages 2 and 3 of the student worksheet in advance http://illuminations.nctm.org/imath/3-5/GeometricSolids/student/worksheet.PDF so that it is available at the start of the activity. (Print only the tables for recording the answers because the questions are on the website.) 2. Do the online math activity Exploring Geometric Solids and Their Properties at http://illuminations.nctm.org/imath/3-5/GeometricSolids/student/index.html.
3. After you complete the online lesson open up Microsoft Word (Start > Common Programs > Word). Use the Draw Toolbar, AutoShapes, and the Draw menu to create your own geometric net. (Remember to Save your document often.
4. Use the Help menu to learn how to use the Draw toolbar (Help > Contents and Index > Find "draw toolbar").
4. Print a copy of your geometric net according to your teacher's directions.
NOTE to Teachers: The teacher site address for the online lesson is http://illuminations.nctm.org/imath/3-5/GeometricSolids/index.html. You may choose to add some of the questions to the student worksheet so that the students will answer specific, thought-provoking questions. Post the instructions for the online shape spinner at the computer so that students can easily review that information. |
