IV. SPELLING

A. Write all the upper and lower case letters of the alphabet.

B. Use phonics knowledge and basic patterns to spell three and four-letter words accurately (e.g., CVC= hop; CVCe=hope).

C. Introduce basic elements of phonetic analysis (common letter/sound relationships) and structural analysis (syllables and basic prefixes and suffixes).

  1. Establish a spelling routine in your classroom that gives a list of words to each student.

  2. Have students bring their spelling list to their computer workstations.

  3. Demonstrate the proper way to turn on the computer and log on. (Control+Alt+Delete, username, password)

  4. Have students turn on their computer.

  5. Demonstrate how to open a word processing program such as MS Works or MS Word. (Start menu>Common Programs)

  6. Have students open the program at their workstation.

  7. Direct students to type their list in a new document. (Teacher may need to give individual help to students using the spacebar, Backspace, and Enter keys.)

  8. When students finish typing their lists, demonstrate how to save the document to a teacher specified location (network drive, floppy disk, server space, etc.) for use in a future lesson (see Spelling Activity #2).

  9. Demonstrate how to properly log off and turn off the computer.

  10. Have students turn off their workstations.
