IV. SPELLING

A. Write all the upper and lower case letters of the alphabet.

B. Use phonics knowledge and basic patterns to spell three and four-letter words accurately (e.g., CVC= hop; CVCe=hope).

C. Introduce basic elements of phonetic analysis (common letter/sound relationships) and structural analysis (syllables and basic prefixes and suffixes).

  1. Review with students that the work they do on a computer can be saved and retrieved for use at a later time. Explain that when they open files from a network they may encounter files that don't belong to them. Create a class list of things that they should and shouldn't do with or to the files they may find. Use this opportunity to introduce NPS Wide Area Network policies.

  2. Have students turn their computers on.

  3. Discuss the placement of files on a floppy disk, computer hard drive or network drive. Use the metaphor of searching for a document in a file cabinet with folders.

  4. Have students find their previously saved list of spelling words (See Spelling Activity #1).

  5. Demonstrate how to double-click on the icon to open the file.

  6. Have students open the file.

  7. Demonstrate how to click-hold-drag to select text.

  8. Have students click-hold-drag to select the words on their list.

  9. Demonstrate the use of the font size button on the toolbar.


  10. Have students change the font size of their spelling list.

  11. Demonstrate the use of the Print shortcut button in the toolbar. (The Print button will automatically print the whole document. To print only certain pages, use the File>Print menu.)

  12. Have students print their list to take home
  • You may want to have students repeat Spelling Activity #1 and 2 on their own for future spelling lists.
  • You may want to have students repeat steps 2-12 above using other buttons from the toolbar (bold, font style, color, italic, underline, etc.)
