Description: In this unit students will progress through the roles of Explorer, Researcher, Designer, and Evaluator
as they learn about plants.

Student as Explorer : Students explore a variety books, videos, and web sites to discover new and interesting things about plants.

Student as Researcher: Students investigate, research, and conduct experiments with plants.

  • Seed & Plant Observation: Students plant seeds in ziplock baggies and observe and draw their seeds and label plant parts in MS Paint (use a magnifying glass). PASS Grades 1-3 Science Processes: I. A & B (Observing), and VII. C (Inquiry). PASS Visual Art: C
  • Seed Sorts: Students do open sorts of actual seeds (size, shape, color, texture - use a magnifying glass), and then illustrate how they sorted in MS Paint. PASS Grades 1-3 Science Processes: I. A (Observing), II. A & B (Classifying), and VII. C (Inquiry). PASS Math: I. C. PASS Visual Art: C

  • Seed Count:
Students cut apart some fruit and count the seeds contained (green peas, green beans, avocado, orange, apple, cherry tomato) and type their results in Word or Works, leaving enough room to draw pictures (pictographs) of the number of seeds, or they create a pictograph in MS Paint. PASS Grades 1-3 Science: I. A & B (Observing), IV. B (Interpreting), and V. B (Communicating). PASS Math: VI. B. PASS Visual Art: C
  • Vocabulary: Students keep a vocabulary list of new words they learn. PASS Language Arts: I. & II.

Cut words apart and make a matching game, or make a bulletin board web to show animals that eat the seedeaters (food web). (This activity would be a good partner to an edible seed sprouting activity- see resources below.) PASS Language Arts: I. & II.

Student as Designer: Students design creative products that explain and illustrate properties of plants, how people and other animals use plants, and how plants benefit the environment.

  • Recipes: Students type in (their own version of) vegetable recipes then change the font of the ingredients to match the color of the vegetable. May want to insert clip art as an extension. PASS Language Arts: II. , B, E, F
