Classroom Behavior Consequences

Teachers use a demerit system in class when classroom rules are broken.   Classroom demerits add up over the period of a week and start over every Monday.  Use of demerits will result in the following:

Outside Class Behavior Consequences

Irving also uses a demerit system when rules are broken in areas outside of the classroom such as at lunch, recess, in the halls, before or after school, etc.   Outside class demerits add up over the period of a nine-weeks.  Use of demerits will result in the following:

Tardy Consequences

Irving also uses a demerit system for students who are tardy.  Tardies are counted and tracked by each teacher and add up over the period of a nine-weeks.  Use of demerits will result in the following:

Detention back to the top

Detention may be assigned by any classroom teacher or by the administration.  The detention may be assigned before school, after school, lunch or Saturday. Continued failure to serve detention will result in further disciplinary action.  Community service may be an option.

After School Detention (ASD)  back to the top

  • ASD is from 3:40pm to 5:30pm and meets in Ms Haring's room (sixth grade hall, room W2).  ASD begins at 3:40, students must be on time or they will not be allowed to stay.
  • Students must have an assignmet to work on or a book to read (chapter books please).  NO magazines, comic books, drawing, writing notes, etc.  
  • Students must bring their own materials (pencil, paper, dictionary, etc.); ASD teachers will not supply materials.
  • Students may not leave ASD at any time to go to their locker.
  • Students must be working or reading at all times.  NO magazines, comic books, drawing, writing notes, etc.
  • Students will leave the building immediately after ASD is released.  The phone in the office is available to contact a parent if needed for a ride but students should leave the building after making their phone call.
Failure to serve this detention will result in administrative action.  Failure to serve is not showing up or being asked to leave for not following the ASD rules or not having work.

Saturday School back to the top
Saturday School is an administrative consequence.  Saturday School will be given for student behavior that typically warrants a consequence beyond that offered by after school detention.  It is used as an alternative to out-of-school suspension.

Suspension  back to the top
Suspension is the denial by the school administration of the right of a student to attend class, school or school-sponsored activities.  It may be:

  • for the rest of the day,
  • for a specified period of time,
  • until conference with parents is held,
  • for the balance of the current semester and the succeeding semester.

Any suspension is subject to appeal.

During the time of suspension, the student may not come on Norman Public School property or attend any school activities.  This includes before school, after school, the lunch period or any time when other students are in attendance for academic or extra-curricular activities sponsored by the school.
