Roosevelt Elementary School students turned their love of reading into a statewide accomplishment this winter, finishing second in Oklahoma in the annual ReadBowl.
The four-week global competition, which began January 12, challenges PreK–12th grade teams to log as many reading minutes as possible before Super Bowl Sunday. ReadBowl is hosted by the Share the Magic Foundation, founded by former NFL player Malcolm Mitchell, whose mission is to transform children’s lives through literacy.
Multiple third-, fourth- and fifth-grade classes at Roosevelt participated. Teachers prepared students by reading Mitchell’s books, conducting reading interest surveys and building excitement for the competition. While class reading counted toward totals, students were responsible for tracking and logging their independent reading at home.
Several Roosevelt classes earned weekly recognition. Mrs. Shepard’s and Mr. Smith’s third-grade classes ranked among the top 100 teams in their conference, breaking into the top 50, while Mrs. Jarman’s third-grade class also reached the top 100 during one week of competition.
Collectively, Roosevelt’s reading minutes placed the school in the top five in Oklahoma, ultimately finishing second in the state.
“Our students fully embraced the challenge and demonstrated incredible dedication to reading,” Principal Kristen Earley said. “We are proud of the effort our students, staff and families put into this competition and the culture of literacy it continues to build at Roosevelt.”
Roosevelt Elementary’s strong showing underscores the school’s continued commitment to fostering a culture of literacy and empowering students through the power of reading.
