Norman Public Schools (NPS) is aware of the memo shared by the State Superintendent of Public Instruction regarding a directive on a moment of silence.
NPS already follows the law and Board policy 5010, which requires our schools to observe a minute of silence each day. During this time, students and staff may reflect, meditate, pray, or engage in another silent activity, as long as it does not interfere with others.
NPS will continue to observe this daily minute of silence at the regular time, and our schools will operate as usual. This practice is carried out in a way that is respectful to all, honoring a wide range of beliefs, customs, and religious viewpoints.
Adding another minute of silence at 12:00, as requested by the State Superintendent of Public Instruction, would create an unnecessary disruption to the school day.
Our focus remains on providing students with a safe, supportive environment and a high-quality educational experience.
